The Western Dressage Association of Florida (WDAFL) held it’s second annual meeting November 15 at the beautiful Grand Oaks Resort in Weirsdale, Fl. In attendance were members,
guests, and the board of directors. Also in attendance were the winners of our first ever, year end High Point Awards, proudly sponsored by PoloGear USA.
The evening started off with dinner catered by Grand Oaks, which was outstanding. The business meeting followed. The board had reached out to equine businesses for raffle
donations and through their generosity we had a wonderful selection of “horsey” items to raffle off.
Our guest speaker was WDAFL member, Marsha HartfordSapp, who owns and operates Southern Oaks Equine Center in Tallahassee, Fl. A professional trainer and rider, Marsh is best
known for her work with wild mustangs in the Mustang Makeover Competition. All of her mustang’s are worked and trained using dressage principles. Everyone was fascinated and
inspired by her work with these amazing animals!
But by far the highlight of the evening was the awards. PoloGear USA is our first ever sponsor and what a fantastic job they did. Working with Jeanette Sassoon to create the awards, we
were beyond excited to present our winners with their hard earned awards. Ball caps were awarded to third place winners; second place winners took home a halfzip long sleeve shirt;
first place our 3 winners were the happy recipients of a long sleeve western shirt in a stunning teal color. All of these awards had the WDAFL & PoloGear logos embroidered on them. For
the overall High Point winners youth, amateur, and open they will be wearing with pride, a Gist engraved silver belt buckle. For a complete list of the winners, click here.
One last very special award was given out, The Valiant Award. Named in honor of Jeanette Sassoon’s late dressage horse Valiant, who competed in Prix St. George even though
he was completely blind. This award, to be given to a member of WDAFL for showing outstanding commitment in the area of volunteering their time to help promote western dressage in
Florida. With great pleasure I presented the first recipient of the Valiant Award to board member Daryl Leonard, who has gone above and beyond in all her work for WDAFL.
The evening was a huge success for WDAFL and it’s members. In one year we’ve grown from 24 to 85 members. We look forward to next year and our continued partnership with
Sincerely, Lynn Shinkle
